Interactive Story Games

Hello ! Today, I will review Interactive Story Games.

Graphics vary from one game to another, with worlds more or less dark. But there is one common point with these games: the multiple choices. The player interacts with the video game and his own decisions impact the way things turn out. It is like the butterfly effect, a property of chaotic systems by which small changes in initial conditions can lead to large-scale variation in the future state of the system. It is an old concept which is used in video games to show the importance of choices. Nevertheless, the coding time for the different endings costs a lot of time. Hence money is a limit of butterfly effect in video games.

Now, I want to show you an Interactive Story Game:

Life is strange

Release: 2015

Developer: Deck Nine Games, Dontnod Entertainment

Publisher: Square Enix

Genre: Adventure, point and click

Official Website: https://lifeisstrange.square-enix-games.com/fr

Description

It is the story of Max Caulfied, a photography student in Blackwell University. She discovers that she can go back in time the day she saves her best friend, Chloe Price. After that, both girls investigate the mysterious disappearance of the student Rachel Amber and reveal the dark side of Arcadia Bay.

Life is Strange is like an interactive movie with cinematics and moments where the player has to make choices to determine the rest of the game. Going back in time allows you to see the consequences of your choices and to decide if you want to change it or not. You can make a choice related to your personnal values or something totally different. Life is Strange is also about problems of the real world such as depression, intimidation, mental illness or grief.

My opinion

I appreciate Life is Strange because IRL (In Real Life), you can not go back in time. It accounts for choices impact and leads to reflection. I think one of the moral of the story encourages you thinking of consequences of our actions. Furthermore, I admire the graphic design which make the game more immersive.

I hope that you now want to try it !

See you soon !

  1. You make the game sound really interesting ; I’ve heard about it before, but the more people talk about it, the more I feel like I’m really missing on something. Maybe your review will be what makes me buy it ! 😉
